In Hinduism, Shanidev is known as the giver of karma, judge and protector of religion. Shani Jayanti is the divine date when Shanidev, the son of Lord Surya and Chaya (Samvarana), appeared on earth. Shani Jayanti, celebrated on the Amavasya (new moon day) of Jyeshtha month, is also popularly known as Shani Amavasya, and devotees worship Shanidev on this day to seek freedom from their sins and happiness and peace in life.

This day is especially important for those devotees who are struggling with troubles, diseases, financial crises or planetary defects in life.

 

Shani Jayanti Shubh Muhurat

According to the Drik Panchang, 

  • The new moon date of the Jyeshtha month will start on 26 May at 12:11 pm. 

Also, 

  • The new moon date of the Jyeshtha month will end on 27 May at 8:31 am. 

Udaya Tithi is recognized in Sanatan Dharma. Therefore, Shani Jayanti will be celebrated on 27 May.

 

The Divine Form and importance of Shani Dev

Lord Shani Dev holds a special place among the nine planets. He is a slow-moving planet, but his effect is very deep and far-reaching. He is considered to be a subtle inspector of deeds. He gives results to a person according to his good and bad deeds. That is why he is called the god of justice. The influence of Shani Dev inspires a person to follow the path of discipline, hard work, restraint and religion.

 

Neelanjanasamabhasam Raviputram Yamagrajam.

(नीलांजनसमाभासं रविपुत्रं यमाग्रजम्।)

Chhayamartandasambhutam Tam Namami Shanaishcharam.

(छायामार्तण्डसम्भूतं तं नमामि शनैश्चरम्॥)

 

That is, I salute Shani Dev who shines like blue eyeliner, is the son of Sun God and the elder brother of Yamraj, is born from the union of Chhaya Devi and Sun.

According to religious beliefs, Lord Shani is revered as the lord of discipline , karma, and justice. His influence is profound—he blessed those who walk the path of righteousness and disciplined those who stray. While many people fear his presence in their astrological charts, the truth is that shani dev does not punish you—he teaches us. His lessons, though often difficult, are meant to guide individuals toward spiritual growth and self-improvement. 

 

Religious Ritual of Shani Jayanti

On the day of Shani Jayanti, after getting up in the morning and taking a bath, the idol of Shani Dev is anointed with sesame oil. Black sesame, urad, black clothes, blue flowers and iron are dear to Shani Dev. 

 

Chanting the Shani Mantra 

“Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namah”

on this day is considered very virtuous.

Some devotees visit Shani temples and light diyas in front of Shanidev, donate black sesame seeds, and especially offer oil. This tradition of offering oil is also seen as a symbol of calming the intense heat of the sun on his body.

 

Importance of Donation

Donating on Shani Jayanti is believed to bring immense blessings and remove obstacles from one’s life. It is said in the Puranas that Shanidev is quickly pleased with charity and service. On this day, donating food, clothes, umbrellas, slippers, oil, black sesame seeds, urad, and iron utensils to the poor, disabled, elderly and helpless people is very auspicious.

The act of giving is a way to cleanse one’s karma and invite divine grace. Shanidev is not pleased only by worship; he also sees our devotion from behavior and service. Giving food to a hungry person, giving a stick to a blind person, and supporting a handicapped person – all this is true worship of Shani.

 

Spiritual feeling

Shani Jayanti is not only an occasion to attain physical and material pleasures, but it is also a festival of introspection and self-purification. On this day, we should consider what our deeds are? Are we fair towards others? Is there compassion, service and restraint in our behavior?

Shani Maharaj teaches us that every ups and downs of life is the result of our deeds. If we do auspicious deeds, follow the path of truth and serve the poor and the needy, then Shanidev will definitely be pleased and there will be permanent happiness and peace in our lives.

Shani Jayanti is an extremely auspicious occasion when we can rectify our deeds. This day is a festival to get the blessings of Lord Shanidev, to get rid of our defects, and to pave the way for spiritual advancement. Prayers, worship and service done on this day definitely fill our lives with positive energy, stability and prosperity.

As we celebrate Shani Jayanti 2025, let us all take a pledge that we will follow the path of religion, service, justice and compassion in our lives and will become a support for the deprived, disabled and suffering sections of society. This will be our true devotion towards Shanidev.
