The holy month of Shravan is regarded as the most sacred time for the worship of Lord Shiva. Throughout this month, Shiva temples are filled with devotees observing fasts, offering prayers, and performing Abhishek. The Amavasya that falls during this auspicious month is known as Hariyali Amavasya. It is also called Shravan Amavasya or Sawan Amavasya.
Hariyali Amavasya is a festival dedicated to expressing gratitude towards nature. For centuries, people have observed this day by planting trees, worshipping Lord Shiva, offering Pitru Tarpan, and performing acts of charity. It is believed that the virtuous deeds performed with devotion on this day bring manifold spiritual blessings.
According to the Drik Panchang, Hariyali Amavasya will be observed on Wednesday, 12 August 2026.

The month of Shravan falls during the monsoon season, when nature is at its most beautiful. The earth is covered with lush greenery, fields flourish with fresh crops, and trees are rejuvenated with new life. This is why the Amavasya of Shravan is known as Hariyali Amavasya, meaning the “New Moon of Greenery.”
According to Hindu beliefs, greenery symbolizes prosperity, happiness, and positive energy. This festival inspires us to protect nature and highlights the importance of preserving trees and the environment.
In Sanatan Dharma, the Amavasya Tithi is considered highly auspicious for taking a holy bath, performing charity, and offering Pitru Tarpan. The significance of this day becomes even greater when it falls during the sacred month of Shravan, which is especially dear to Lord Shiva.
It is believed that taking a holy dip in a sacred river, worshipping Lord Shiva, offering Pitru Tarpan, and donating to the needy on this day brings immense spiritual merit. Many Hindu scriptures mention that selfless charity and service performed with devotion earn the blessings of one’s ancestors and lead to happiness, prosperity, and peace in life.
The primary message of Hariyali Amavasya is the protection of nature. Since the monsoon season provides ideal conditions for plant growth, planting trees on this day is considered highly auspicious.
Traditionally, devotees plant sacred trees such as Peepal, Banyan, Neem, Bael (Bilva), Shami, Kadamba, Amla (Indian Gooseberry), and Mango. Besides their religious significance, these trees play an important role in environmental conservation. Planting even one tree is considered a precious gift for future generations.
As the month of Shravan is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipping Him on Hariyali Amavasya holds special significance. On this day, devotees offer Gangajal (holy Ganges water), milk, Bilva leaves, Datura flowers, and fresh flowers to the Shivling.
Many devotees also perform Rudrabhishek, a sacred ritual dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed that Rudrabhishek brings peace and harmony to the family, removes obstacles, and fulfills sincere wishes.

Various texts in the Sanatan tradition emphasize the importance and greatness of charity.

If you arrange a meal for a needy child, an underprivileged family, or a helpless person on this sacred occasion, it is considered an act of true devotion to Lord Shiva.

The resounding chants of “Har-Har Mahadev,” the unwavering faith of Kanwariyas, the throngs of devotees crowding Shiva temples, and the continuous Jalabhishek of the Shivling- the arrival of the month of Shravan marks not merely the beginning of a new month on the calendar but the start of a sacred period of devotion to Shiva, when the entire atmosphere becomes imbued with spirituality.
