In Sanatan Dharma, each incarnation of Lord Vishnu holds special significance. Whenever unrighteousness increased on earth, the influence of evil forces increased, and righteousness faced a crisis, Lord Vishnu took various incarnations to serve the world. One of these divine incarnations is the extremely radiant and fierce form of Lord Narasimha.
This form of Lord Narasimha is considered a symbol of strength, courage, protection of dharma, and protection of devotees. This incarnation teaches us that when a devotee remembers God with a true heart, God can appear in any form to protect him. Narasimha Jayanti is celebrated with utmost reverence and devotion in memory of this divine manifestation.
Narasimha Jayanti, celebrated on the Chaturdashi Tithi of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase) of the month of Vaishakh, is considered especially virtuous for devotees. On this day, Lord Vishnu, to protect his devoted devotee Prahlad, assumed the form of half man and half lion and killed the demon king Hiranyakashipu.
In 2026, the sacred festival of Narasimha Jayanti will be celebrated on Thursday, April 30. This date falls on Vaishakh Shukla Chaturdashi, which is considered extremely auspicious and fruitful from a religious perspective.
The auspicious times for worship and fasting on this day will be as follows:
Midday Sankalp time: 10:59 am to 1:38 pm
Special Puja Muhurta: 4:17 pm to 6:56 pm
Paran time: After 5:41 am on May 1
Religious belief holds that Lord Narasimha appeared in the evening, so worship at this time is considered especially fruitful. Devotees who worship the Lord during this auspicious time are freed from fear, obstacles, and negative forces.
In ancient times, there was a very powerful demon king named Hiranyakashipu. Through rigorous penance, he obtained a boon from Lord Brahma that neither man nor animal could kill him. He could be killed either day or night, indoors or outdoors, with any weapon or weapon.
Under the influence of this boon, Hiranyakashipu became extremely arrogant. He declared himself God and banned the worship of Lord Vishnu in his kingdom.
But his son, Prahlad, was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. Despite numerous tortures, Prahlad did not stop chanting the Lord’s name. Finally, when Hiranyakashipu, enraged, asked where his Lord was, Prahlad replied, “God is everywhere, even in this pillar.”
At that very moment, Lord Vishnu appeared in the form of Narasimha from the pillar in the palace. Neither fully human nor fully animal.
He killed Hiranyakashipu with his nails at dusk, on the palace threshold, and freed the world from Hiranyakashipu’s terror.
Narasimha Jayanti is a grand festival celebrating the triumph of righteousness. This festival tells us that truth and devotion always triumph. No matter how difficult the circumstances, a devotee who remembers God with a true heart is never alone.
