In Sanatan Dharma, the Purnima (full moon) tithi is considered extremely sacred and auspicious. Every Purnima has its own special religious significance, but the Purnima falling in the Jyeshtha month holds a particularly exalted position. On this day, the Moon becomes complete with all sixteen kalas (phases) and showers the earth with nectar-like moonlight.

According to religious beliefs, performing bathing, chanting, penance, fasting, worship, and charity on Jyeshtha Purnima brings great merit (punya) to a person and brings happiness, prosperity, and mental peace in life

Jyeshtha Purnima is also celebrated in many places as Vat Purnima or Vat Savitri Purnima. On this day, married women observe a fast for the long life and unbroken marital bliss (akhand saubhagya) of their husbands and worship the Banyan tree (Vat Vriksha). In religious scriptures, the Banyan tree is considered the form of the Gods, so its worship is regarded as highly meritorious.

According to religious beliefs, worshipping Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi on Jyeshtha Purnima removes all sufferings from life. This tithi is considered a special occasion for attaining mental peace and accumulating merit.

On this day, listening to and organizing the Satyanarayan Katha holds special importance. It is believed that performing Satyanarayan Katha with faith and devotion brings happiness and prosperity to the home and fills the family with positive energy.

Vat Purnima Vrat and Puja Vidhi

On Jyeshtha Purnima, married women also observe the Vat Savitri Vrat. This fast is kept for the long life of the husband and unbroken marital happiness.

After taking a bath in the morning, women wear clean clothes, adorn themselves fully, and take a vow for the fast. They then go to the Banyan tree and perform its ritualistic worship. Water, flowers, akshat (rice grains), and sweetened water are offered at the roots of the Banyan tree.

During the puja, women take raw cotton thread and circumambulate the Banyan tree while praying for a happy married life. Religious belief holds that the Banyan tree is the abode of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh (Shiva). Therefore, worshipping it brings special blessings of God upon the family.

After the puja, taking blessings from elders is considered highly auspicious. Additionally, donating items related to marital bliss (suhag) to an elderly married woman multiplies the merit of the fast many times over.

In Sanatan Dharma, charity (daan) is called the greatest dharma. Charity performed, especially on Purnima tithi is considered extremely meritorious.
