In Sanatan Dharma, Amavasya (New Moon Day) is considered a sacred occasion for self-purification, remembrance of ancestors, and spiritual worship. When this Amavasya falls during Adhik Maas (extra lunar month), its significance becomes even greater. In the year 2026, Jyeshtha Adhik Maas Amavasya will fall on Monday, making it a Somvati Amavasya as well.

According to religious beliefs, this rare spiritual combination occurs approximately once every three years, and the merits gained from holy bathing, charity, chanting, penance, and service performed on this day multiply manifold.

Jyeshtha Adhik Maas is also known as Purushottam Maas, which is dedicated to Lord Shri Hari Vishnu. The entire month is considered highly auspicious for devotion, spiritual practices, and virtuous deeds. Therefore, the Amavasya of this sacred month brings a highly rewarding opportunity for devotees.

When is Jyeshtha Adhik Amavasya 2026?

According to the Drik Panchang, Jyeshtha Adhik Maas Amavasya will be observed on Monday, 15 June 2026.

  • Amavasya Tithi Begins: 14 June 2026 at 12:19 PM
  • Amavasya Tithi Ends: 15 June 2026 at 08:23 AM

Since the Amavasya Tithi will prevail during sunrise on 15 June, religious traditions consider this day especially auspicious for holy bathing, Pitru Tarpan, charity, and worship of Lord Vishnu.

Why Does Adhik Amavasya Occur Once Every Three Years?

The Hindu calendar is based on the movement of the Moon, whereas the Gregorian calendar follows the Sun. A lunar year consists of approximately 354 days, while a solar year has around 365 days. Due to this difference of nearly 11 days, an extra month is added approximately every three years to balance the calendars. This additional month is called Adhik Maas.

As a result, Adhik Amavasya also occurs once every three years. This rare period is considered extremely beneficial for spiritual growth and accumulation of virtue.

Religious Significance of Jyeshtha Adhik Amavasya

Since this Amavasya falls in Purushottam Maas, the beloved month of Lord Vishnu, it is considered highly sacred in Sanatan Dharma. Religious beliefs state that charity, chanting, meditation, and spiritual practices performed on this day grant eternal spiritual merit.

This day is considered especially powerful for receiving the blessings of Lord Vishnu and removing difficulties from life.

Adhik Maas is dedicated to Lord Purushottam Shri Hari Vishnu. Reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama, listening to Shrimad Bhagavat Katha, and worshipping Lord Satyanarayan on this day are believed to bring peace, prosperity, and happiness into one’s life.

According to Hindu beliefs, Lord Vishnu fulfills the sincere wishes of devotees on this sacred day.

Rituals of Jyeshtha Adhik Amavasya

Wake up during Brahma Muhurta and take a holy bath. If possible, bathe in a sacred river; otherwise, bathing at home with Ganga water mixed in regular water is also considered auspicious.

After bathing:

  • Offer water (Arghya) to Lord Surya
  • Take a vow of fasting
  • Worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi
  • Offer yellow flowers, sandalwood, incense, lamps, and food offerings
  • Chant the mantra:

    “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya.”

Tulsi worship also holds special importance on this day. Light a ghee lamp near the Tulsi plant in the morning and evening.

In the afternoon, remember your ancestors while facing the south direction.

In the evening:

  • Offer water to the Peepal tree
  • Light a mustard oil lamp beneath it
  • Perform circumambulation (Parikrama)

It is believed that these rituals invite the blessings of both Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi.

Importance of Charity

In Sanatan Dharma, charity is considered one of the highest virtues of human life. Charity performed on rare and sacred occasions like Jyeshtha Adhik Amavasya is believed to bring multiplied spiritual rewards.

According to religious beliefs, donations, chanting, penance, and acts of service performed during Adhik Maas become inexhaustible in merit, meaning their positive effects never diminish.

This is why helping the needy, feeding the hungry, offering water to the thirsty, and serving helpless individuals are regarded as highly virtuous acts on this day.

Jyeshtha month is considered the hottest period of the year, making water donation and food donation especially significant.

In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna explains the importance of selfless charity:

“Datavyam iti yad danam diyate ‘nupakarine,
Deshe kale cha patre cha tad danam sattvikam smritam.”

Meaning: Charity given selflessly, without expectation, at the proper time, place, and to a deserving person, is known as Sattvic charity.

Jyeshtha Adhik Amavasya is considered such a sacred occasion where charity performed with devotion and selflessness brings spiritual peace and divine blessings.

According to scriptures, charity and service not only help remove sins but also bring happiness, peace, prosperity, and positive energy into life.
