Importance of Donation on Amavasya

In Sanatan Dharma, the tradition of donation has been practiced for centuries. Religious texts and scriptures emphasize the importance of donation as an integral part of human life. People donate on special days for mental peace, fulfillment of desires, earning virtues, overcoming planetary defects, and receiving the blessings of God.

However, the virtue of donation is attained only when it is given to a deserving person at the right time and with a sincere heart. The Garuda Purana elaborates on the importance of donation as described by Lord Vishnu.

But the merit of donation is obtained only when it is given at the right time to a deserving person. The donation must be given in the right manner and with a true heart. In Garuda Purana, Lord Vishnu has elaborated on the importance of donation. In Garuda Purana, it is said–

Data daridrah kripanorthyuktah putrovideyah kujanasya seva

Parapakaareshu narasya mrityuh prajayate discharitani pancha।।

Meaning: You must donate according to your capacity. Donation should always be given to a deserving person. Although donation bestows merit and pleases God, indiscriminate donation can lead to poverty; hence, before donating, assess whether you are capable of donating or not. According to the scriptures, a person should donate one-tenth (10%) of their earnings.

Emphasizing the importance of donation, the scriptures say—

Matapitro rgurau mitre vinite chopakaarine

Deenanaatha vishishteshu dattam tatsaphalam bhavet

Meaning: The donation given to parents, gurus, friends, virtuous people, benefactors, and especially to the poor, helpless, and orphans is fruitful and earns merit.
