This year, Varuthini Ekadashi falls on May 4th. The auspicious period for observing Ekadashi begins late on May 3rd at 11:24 PM and concludes on May 4th at 8:38 PM. The fast can be broken on May 4th between 5:37 AM and 8:17 AM.               

 

Legend (Katha) of Varuthini Ekadashi

In ancient times, King Mandhata, revered for his virtuous rule, faced a trial when a wild bear attacked him during meditation. Despite the ordeal, he maintained his composure and prayed to Lord Vishnu for guidance. Responding to his plea, Lord Vishnu appeared, vanquishing the bear and advising the king to observe Varuthini Ekadashi in Mathura.  

Following Lord Vishnu’s counsel, King Mandhata observed the Varuthini Ekadashi fast with utmost devotion. As a result, his injured foot was miraculously healed, and he regained his strength. The king’s faith and adherence to the Ekadashi rituals earned him divine grace, leading to his eventual liberation.

Varuthini Ekadashi’s significance lies in its ability to grant spiritual solace and physical well-being to devotees. Through sincere observance of the fast and devotion to Lord Vishnu, one can overcome obstacles, purify the soul, and attain divine blessings.     

 

Puja Rituals of Varuthini Ekadashi

  • Awakening: Wake up during the Brahma Muhurta, the auspicious time before dawn, and take a bath.
  • Resolution: Make a resolve (sankalp) to observe the fast.
  • Pooja Preparation: Set up a wooden platform and place an image of Lord Vishnu on it, covered with red or yellow cloth.
  • Offering: Offer Panchamrit (a mixture of milk, curd, ghee, honey, and Ganga water) to Lord Vishnu.
  • Illumination: Light incense, lamps, and camphor.
  • Worship: Worship Lord Vishnu with devotion, offering Tulsi leaves, fruits, and sweets.
  • Invocation: Chant the mantras of Lord Vishnu.
  • Aarti: Conclude with Aarti and distribute Prasad among all.
