Mythology

Lord Shiva once threw his radiance into the ocean. This resulted in the birth of a very powerful child, who later became the demon king Jalandhar. Jalandhar was renowned for his strength and valor. Jalandhar fought to obtain Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Parvati, but was unsuccessful. Goddess Lakshmi adopted him as her brother, while Goddess Parvati went and narrated the entire story to Lord Vishnu. Jalandhar was married to Vrinda, a very devoted and religious woman. The power of Vrinda’s devotion to her husband meant that Jalandhar could neither be killed nor defeated. To defeat Jalandhar, it was essential to break Vrinda’s devotion to her husband.

To defeat Jalandhar, Lord Vishnu disguised himself as a sage and went to Vrinda. Vrinda inquired about the condition of her husband Jalandhar, who was fighting. The sage showed her two monkeys holding Jalandhar’s torso and head in their hands. Seeing Jalandhar dead, Vrinda was deeply saddened and fainted. Upon regaining consciousness, Vrinda pleaded with the sage in the form of a god to bring her husband back to life. The sage revived Jalandhar and entered his body. Vrinda was unaware of this deception. Vrinda, honoring Jalandhar as her husband, performed her duty of pativrata, which broke her pativrata, and Jalandhar was defeated in the battle.

When Vrinda learned of this, she cursed Lord Vishnu, saying that he would be transformed into a heartless rock. Consequently, Lord Shaligram became a stone. The Lord’s transformation into stone created an imbalance in the universe. All the gods approached Vrinda and pleaded with her to free him from the curse. Vrinda freed Lord Vishnu from the curse, but she immolated herself. A few days later, a Tulsi plant grew at the spot where she immolated herself.

Lord Vishnu then said to Vrinda, “O Vrinda, because of your chastity, you have become dearer to me than even Lakshmi. Now, in the form of Tulsi, you will always remain with me.” Since then, the festival of Tulsi-Shaligram marriage is celebrated every year on Kartik Shukla Dwadashi.
