In Sanatan Dharma, every date has its own spiritual significance, but Amavasya is particularly considered highly fruitful for bathing, charity, tarpan, and ancestral peace. Among these Amavasya dates, Mauni Amavasya is described as a meritorious Amavasya like the others. This date, observed on the Amavasya of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Magha, provides an unparalleled opportunity for self-purification, silent meditation, and the welfare of ancestors.

Mauni Amavasya is also called Maghi Amavasya. On this day, japa-tapa (chanting and austerities) and acts of service performed while observing silence grant the practitioner special merits. According to the scriptures, bathing and charity performed on this day free a person from worldly bonds and lead them towards the path of moksha (liberation).

When is Mauni Amavasya in 2026?

In the year 2026, Mauni Amavasya will be observed on 18 January. The Amavasya tithi begins at 12:03 AM on the night of 18 January and ends at 1:21 AM on the night of 19 January. According to the principle of Udaya Tithi, this festival will be celebrated on 18 January.

Significance of Bathing

Bathing in the Ganga, Yamuna, Narmada, Sarayu, or any other sacred river on Mauni Amavasya is considered extremely meritorious. The tradition is to bathe during the Brahma Muhurta in the early morning and offer arghya to the Sun God. While bathing, remember the ancestors and offer water to them. By doing so, the ancestors are pleased, bestow blessings upon the family, and bring happiness and prosperity into life. It is believed that performing tarpan, pindadaan, and shraddha on this day grants moksha to the ancestors.

What to Do If Ganga Bathing Is Not Possible?

On Mauni Amavasya, millions of devotees attain meritorious benefits by bathing in sacred rivers. However, if for some reason you are unable to bathe in the Ganga or any sacred river, there is no need to despair. At home, add a few drops of Gangajal to the bathing water and bathe during Brahma Muhurta. This is also considered equivalent to Ganga bathing in terms of merit. Additionally, in the evening, light a four-wicked lamp facing the south direction in the house. This remedy is believed to help obtain the grace of ancestors and bring peace and happiness to the home.

Charity on Mauni Amavasya

After bathing, performing charity on Mauni Amavasya is considered highly meritorious. According to the scriptures, charity given on this day yields merits equivalent to a hundred yajnas. Goswami Tulsidas Ji mentions charity in the Ramcharitmanas:

Pragaṭ cāri pada dharma ke kali mahu̐ eka pradhāna.

Jena kena bidhi dīnhe̐ dāna karai kalyāna.

Meaning: The four pillars of dharma are truth, compassion, austerity, and charity, among which in Kaliyuga, charity alone is the principal one. Charity given in any manner brings welfare.

On Mauni Amavasya, one should donate food, clothes, blankets, and essential items to the needy. Additionally, serving cows and feeding fodder and grains to animals and birds also grants special merits. By doing this, the souls of ancestors are satisfied, and one gains freedom from Pitru Dosha.

What to Donate on Mauni Amavasya

Donating food (anna) is considered the best on Mauni Amavasya. On this day, by donating and contributing to projects that provide meals to the poor, destitute, and suffering people through institutions like Narayan Seva Sansthan, one becomes a participant in merits.

Mauni Amavasya is a festival of self-reflection and service. Through silence, bathing, charity, and remembrance of ancestors, this day gives individuals the opportunity to purify their lives and progress towards spiritual advancement. The meritorious acts performed with faith, discipline, and devotion on Mauni Amavasya not only grant moksha to ancestors but also infuse peace, prosperity, and spiritual light into the practitioner’s life.
