Ekadashi is considered a very important day in Hindu religious beliefs. This day is completely dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the sustainer of this universe. The Ekadashi that falls during the Krishna Paksha of the Shravan month is called Kamika Ekadashi. Worship of Shri Hari in the month of Shravan is considered highly fruitful. According to religious beliefs, by donating to the poor, destitute, and helpless people and by worshipping Lord Narayan on this day, the devotee attains salvation.
In the year 2025, Kamika Ekadashi will be celebrated on 21st July. The Ekadashi Tithi will begin on 20th July 2025 at 12:12 PM and will end on 21st July 2025 at 9:38 AM. In Hinduism, the importance is given to Udaya Tithi (the tithi at sunrise); hence, according to Udaya Tithi, Kamika Ekadashi will be observed on 21st July.
It is said that by observing a fast and donating to the poor, destitute, and helpless people on Kamika Ekadashi, a person becomes free from all kinds of sins. Kamika Ekadashi, which falls during Chaturmas, holds a special significance of its own. According to beliefs, this Ekadashi gives results equivalent to performing an Ashwamedha Yajna. There are many classical scriptures that describe the glory of donation. In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna has divided donation into three types—Sattvic, Rajasic, and Tamasic. Sattvic donation is that which is given to a deserving person at the right time and place without expecting anything in return. This type of donation is considered the best.
In the Anushasana Parva of the Mahabharata, it is said—
“Daanam Ekam Kalau Yuge.”
This means that in the age of Kali, donation is the only act that can purify and uplift a person.
In Sanatan Dharma, the importance of donation is not limited to personal upliftment; it is also essential for the collective upliftment and welfare of society. Through donation, a person develops compassion, love, and a spirit of benevolence within, which ultimately leads them toward salvation.
In the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, while mentioning the importance of donation, it is said—
Yajna-dana-tapah-karma na tyajyam karyam eva tat.
Yajno danam tapas chaiva pavanani manishinam.
Meaning, Yajna (sacrifice), donation, and penance—these three actions are not to be renounced; rather, they must be performed because they purify the wise.
Donating on Kamika Ekadashi is a great ritual. It is said that on this auspicious day, donating food and grains is the best. On the virtuous occasion of Kamika Ekadashi, become a part of merit by contributing to the initiative of donating food to the poor, destitute, and underprivileged children of Narayan Seva Sansthan.
