While every Ekadashi is considered dedicated to the worship of Lord Shri Hari Vishnu, the Devshayani Ekadashi—falling during Shukla Paksha of the Ashadha month—holds a particularly special significance. It is also known by names such as Harishayani Ekadashi, Padma Ekadashi, and Ashadhi Ekadashi.
Religious belief holds that on this day, Lord Shri Hari Vishnu enters a state of Yoganidra upon the serpent Sheshnag in the Kshir Sagar. For this reason, this Ekadashi occupies a place of immense importance in the Sanatan tradition.
Devshayani Ekadashi conveys a message of faith, restraint, service, charity, and complete surrender to the Divine. Scriptures state that worshipping Lord Vishnu with devotion, observing a fast, and performing acts of charity on this day eradicates the sins of many lifetimes and bestows the Lord’s special grace upon the devotee.
According to the Drik Panchang, the fast for Devshayani Ekadashi in 2026 will be observed on Saturday, July 25, 2026. The Ekadashi Tithi will begin at 9:12 AM on July 24, 2026, and conclude at 11:34 AM on July 25, 2026. Based on the Udaya Tithi, the festival will be celebrated on July 25, 2026.
Additionally, the Paran can be performed between 6:10 AM and 8:47 AM on July 26, 2026.
The Puranas describe how Lord Shri Hari Vishnu, the Preserver of the Universe, enters Yoganidra in the Kshir Sagar on Devshayani Ekadashi. This divine slumber is not viewed as a pause in the functioning of the world, but rather as a spiritual symbol of the divine laws governing creation. This period of the Lord’s rest imparts a message to devotees regarding restraint, patience, introspection, and the importance of seeking refuge in the Divine.
It is believed that devotees who worship Lord Vishnu on this day are relieved of all their troubles. It paves the way for happiness, prosperity, fame, and spiritual growth in their lives. For this reason, special prayers, bhajans, kirtans, and religious rituals are organized across the country on this day.
Once, the demon king Bali conquered the three worlds through his valor. At the behest of the gods, Lord Vishnu assumed the Vaman avatar, approached King Bali, and asked for a donation of land measuring three paces. Vaman Dev measured the entire earth and sky in just two paces.
With no space left for the third pace, Bali offered his own head at the Lord’s feet. Pleased by Bali’s generosity and truthfulness, Lord Vishnu asked him to choose a boon. Bali requested that the Lord reside in Patal Loka. To honor Bali’s word, Lord Vishnu resides in Patal Loka for four months every year.
On the day of Devshayani Ekadashi, wake up during Brahma Muhurta, bathe, and wear clean, sattvic clothing. Afterward, purify the place of worship and install an idol or picture of Lord Shri Hari Vishnu.
Offer yellow flowers, Tulsi leaves, sandalwood paste, incense, diya, fruits, and Panchamrit to the Lord. Subsequently, chant the mantra “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” and recite the Vishnu Sahasranama or Vishnu Stotra. Maintain a sattvic state of mind throughout the day, abstain from anger and harsh speech, and observe the Ekadashi fast while remembering the Lord.
In the evening, perform the Aarti of Lord Vishnu, listen to the legend of the fast, and break the fast the following day at the designated time.
Chaturmas is considered to begin on Devshayani Ekadashi. According to religious tradition, Lord Vishnu enters a state of Yoganidra for four months and awakens on the day of Dev-Uthani Ekadashi.
For this reason, auspicious activities such as weddings, housewarming ceremonies, and other celebratory events are postponed during this period. This period is considered highly auspicious for devotion, chanting, penance, spiritual discourse, and selfless service. During these months, devotees dedicate as much time as possible to worshipping the Lord and engaging in spiritual practices.
In Sanatan culture, charity is regarded as the highest form of righteousness. Charity performed with faith, especially on the day of Devshayani Ekadashi, is believed to bestow great spiritual merit. Scriptures state that individuals who, according to their means, donate food or clothing, serve cows, or assist the destitute and needy on this day receive the special grace of Lord Vishnu.
Reflecting on the importance of charity, Goswami Tulsidas states in the Ramcharitmanas:
Pragat chari pad dharma ke, Kali mahu ek pradhan;
Jen ken bidhi deenhein daan, karai kalyan.
This means that while the four pillars of Dharma are truth, compassion, penance, and charity, charity is considered supreme in the Kaliyuga. Charity performed in any form paves the way for human well-being.
Scriptures describe the donation of food as the greatest form of charity. In Sanatan tradition, feeding the hungry is considered true worship of the Divine. Arranging a meal for a destitute or needy person on the auspicious occasion of Devshayani Ekadashi is equated to serving Lord Vishnu. Food donation performed with a spirit of service and compassion opens the path to happiness, peace, and divine grace in the donor’s life.
For decades, the Narayan Seva Sansthan has been dedicated to serving the destitute, the helpless, the differently abled, and the needy. On the auspicious occasion of Devshayani Ekadashi, join the Sansthan’s noble initiative of food donation to feed needy children and receive the blessings of Lord Vishnu.
Devshayani Ekadashi conveys a divine message of introspection, faith, service, and surrender. On this holy day, worship Lord Shri Hari and resolve to walk the path of righteousness.
