What is the best way to help poor people if you are a student?

Following China, India holds the title of second most populated country in the world. However, within this enormous population, there is a huge problem of Poverty too.

According to the World Poverty Clock (2022), 6-7% of the Indian population consists of poor individuals. The groups who suffer the most among these poor communities are women and children.

In the global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), India ranks 62 out of 107 countries. Even though over the years, the country and its government has put forth some commendable efforts in uplifting the poor, there is still a long way to go.

The goal of eradicating poverty from the country is possible only if every individual puts in their little contribution or effort in helping the underprivileged. However, how would a student, with no large amount to donate, help the poor?

Here are some of the ways through which a student can help the weaker sections of the society –

  • Volunteering

As a student, volunteering could be the best way to help the underprivileged. You can become a volunteer in an NGO that works towards helping the poor.

NGO volunteers are individuals who work for the NGO on their own will or are deputed by other organisations. By becoming a volunteer for NGOs that work towards uplifting the poor sections of the society, you can feel yourself much more connected and dedicated to the cause.

As a volunteer, NGO that you are working for may provide you with several tasks like teaching, distribution of food, blankets, and so on. Hence, your time, some skills and dedication towards the task are the only major requirements that you would need to have for the role.

  • Teaching the poor

As a student, donation of knowledge is the biggest contribution that you can give to the poor. Even teaching them how to read or write can have a huge impact over their lives.

You can even take tuitions for underprivileged children and help them with their study related doubts.

  • Spreading awareness through social media

The biggest weapon that the youngsters hold in today’s world is social media. Using this platform, you can reach millions of people and spread awareness about the problems that India’s poor sections face. You can share their stories, narratives and even provide some data and facts regarding poverty in the country which can make a lot of people realise the necessity of donating or doing charitable work.

  • Participating in Fundraising events

As students, you can definitely take part in some fundraising events like social events or marathons. You can also do crowdfunding to help the underprivileged.

There are also some organisations that have online fundraising platforms where you can participate or donate a small amount. Narayan Seva Sansthan is one of the best online platforms for this case.

By forming a group of students, you can donate together for a cause by each contributing little amounts.

You can even hold collection drives at your places to collect donations from the public.

  • Donating resources

As a student, you will often find yourselves having resources (like books or toys) that are of no need to you but still can be used by others. Hence, instead of throwing it away, you can always donate it to the needy.
