What is Shradh Paksha and Sarva Pitru Amavasya?

Shradh Paksha, also known as Pitru Paksha or Mahalaya, is a holy period dedicated to paying homage to ancestors and departed loved ones. The ritualistic offerings, donations etc. done during this holy period are called Shradh. We have been born on this earth because of our ancestors, so it is our duty to pray for the peace of their souls.

Along with Shradh Paksha, Sarva Pitru Amavasya is also considered very important; this day is the day of offering tarpan to known and unknown ancestors. On this day, people bathe in holy rivers, offer tarpan to their ancestors, feed Brahmins and poor, needy people and pray to Lord Vishnu, the savior of this world, for the salvation of their ancestors.
