Spiritual Significance of Phalguna Purnima

Religious scriptures consider Phalguna Purnima to be highly auspicious for bathing, donating, chanting, performing penance, and performing puja. It is believed that worshipping Lord Vishnu with proper rituals on this day fulfills all desires and removes obstacles in life. Worshiping Goddess Lakshmi eliminates financial troubles and brings happiness and prosperity to the family.

The full moon symbolizes the mind and emotions, so meditation and spiritual practice on this day brings mental peace and positive energy. Bathing in the Ganges or any holy river on this auspicious day holds special significance. If a holy bath is not possible, bathing at home by mixing Ganga water with water. Afterward, donating charity, especially food, clothing, and money, brings eternal benefits.

Lunar Eclipse on Falgun Purnima 2026

In the year 2026, a lunar eclipse is expected on the day of Phalgun Purnima. According to astrology, the rules of Sutak apply during the eclipse. After the onset of Sutak, the doors of temples are closed and auspicious activities are postponed. Chanting mantras dedicated to Lord Vishnu during the eclipse is considered highly beneficial.

Chanting the mantra “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevay” dispels negative energy and promotes spiritual progress. After the eclipse ends, bathe and meditate, then perform prayers again, and make donations. Doing so nullifies the ill effects of the eclipse and brings good fortune.

Significance of Holika Dahan

Holika Dahan is performed on the night of Falgun Purnima. It is not just a festival, but a symbol of the victory of righteousness over unrighteousness. People surrender their evils, ego, and negative thoughts into the Holika Dahan fire. Circumambulating the fire destroys diseases, diseases, and fears. In many places, the newly harvested ears of corn are offered to the fire to pray for prosperity.

The Story of Phalguna Purnima

According to the Puranas, in ancient times, there was a demon king named Hiranyakashipu. He was extremely arrogant and considered himself superior to God. He banned the worship of God in his kingdom and ordered everyone to worship him. However, his son, Prahlad, was a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu. Despite his father’s repeated persuasion and threats, he refused to abandon his devotion to Lord Vishnu.

Enraged, Hiranyakashipu made several attempts to kill Prahlad, but each time, by the grace of Lord Vishnu, he escaped unharmed. Finally, Hiranyakashipu enlisted the help of his sister, Holika, who had been blessed with the boon of being immune to fire. As planned, Holika sat in the fire with Prahlad in her lap. However, due to divine play, the boon was rendered futile. Holika was consumed by the fire, while the devout Prahlad emerged unscathed.
