Papankusha Ekadashi is an extremely important Ekadashi observed on the Shukla Paksha of the Ashwin month. Like every Ekadashi, on this day too, the preserver of the universe, Lord Vishnu, is worshipped. This Ekadashi controls people’s sins; therefore, it is called Papnkusha Ekadashi. Lord Shri Krishna has described Papankusha Ekadashi in detail to Dharmaraj Yudhishthira.

Papankusha Ekadashi 2025 Date

In the year 2025, Papankusha Ekadashi will be celebrated on October 3. The auspicious timing (shubh muhurat) for Ekadashi will begin on October 2, 2025, at 7:10 AM and will end on October 3, 2025, at 6:32 PM.

Significance of Papankusha Ekadashi

Papankusha Ekadashi is mentioned in detail in the ancient scriptures. It is said that there is no other fast equivalent to this Ekadashi fast. By worshipping Lord Vishnu on Papankusha Ekadashi and donating to the poor, needy, and destitute, one attains eternal merit (akshaya punya) and an increase in happiness and prosperity. This Ekadashi grants the same results as performing a thousand Ashwamedha Yajnas or a hundred Surya Yajnas.

According to the Padma Purana, “The person who devoutly donates gold, sesame, land, cows, food, water, shoes, and umbrellas on this day receives Lord Vishnu’s blessings and is freed from the fear of Yamaraj (the god of death). Also, the person who stays awake at night, sings the Lord’s glories, and performs worship becomes eligible for heaven.”

Importance of Donation

In the Sanatan tradition, donation is considered extremely important. Our religious texts mention the importance of charity, where it is regarded as an infallible means of getting relief from all difficulties and ailments. The tradition of giving has existed in Sanatan Dharma for centuries. People should donate to gain peace of mind, fulfillment of desires, merit, relief from planetary afflictions, and God’s blessings.

The importance of donation increases even more because it is believed that the benefits of your donation are not limited to this life but extend even after death. After death, when your deeds are evaluated before Dharmaraj, these virtuous deeds are what come to your aid. The merit acquired through charity stays with you both while living on this earth and after leaving it.

Many scriptures and Puranas of Sanatan Dharma mention the importance of charity. Highlighting the importance of donation, the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita states:

Yajna-dana-tapah-karma na tyajyam karyam eva tat |
Yajno danam tapash chaiva pavanani manishinam ||

That is, yajna (sacrifice), charity, and penance—these three actions are not to be abandoned; they must indeed be performed because they purify even the wisest.
