The Significance of Papamochani Ekadashi

The word “Papamochani” is made up of two parts: “pap” and “mochani,” meaning “freer from sins.” This Ekadashi is not only a fast but also a means of inner purification. This day provides an opportunity for introspection and surrender to God. The scriptures say that a devotee who worships Lord Hari on this day, offers him Tulsi leaves during the puja, lights a lamp before the idol of the deity, and chants mantras with devotion will be relieved of all the troubles in his life.

By the grace of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, happiness, prosperity, peace, and righteousness prevail in the home. Chanting, penance, and charity on this day yield infinite rewards.

Mythological Story

According to the story recounted in the Puranas, Medhavi Rishi, son of Chyavan Rishi, was engaged in intense penance. His austerities disturbed the heavens. Lord Indra sent the Apsara Manjughosha to disrupt his meditation. Under the influence of temptation, the sage’s meditation was disrupted, and he remained entangled in worldly attractions for years.

When he realized his mistake, he was deeply saddened and began searching for a way to free himself from his sins. Then, Devarshi Narada advised him to observe the Papamochani Ekadashi fast. By observing the fast properly and worshipping Lord Narayana, the intelligent sage regained his spiritual powers and was freed from his sins.

The Importance of Charity on Ekadashi

In the Sanatan tradition, donation is considered a great austerity. It is said that charity, especially on Ekadashi, is considered to yield everlasting results. Donations of food with Narayan Seva Sansthan, clothing, cows, or Dakshina all have special significance in their own places.

Referring to charity in the Skanda Purana, it is said:

Nyayoparjitavittasya dashamshena dhimatah.

Kartavyato viniyogasch ishvaraprityaarthameva cha.

That is, one should consider it one’s duty to donate one-tenth of the wealth acquired through proper means and with superior intellect. Offer your donation for the pleasure of God.
