In Sanatan Dharma, the Ekadashi tithi is considered extremely sacred and spiritually rewarding. Each Ekadashi observed throughout the year holds its own significance, but the Ekadashi that falls in the Shukla Paksha of the Chaitra month, known as Kamada Ekadashi, is especially fruitful.
It is also regarded as the first Ekadashi of the Hindu New Year, offering devotees an opportunity for spiritual growth and fulfillment of their wishes.
It is believed that worshipping Lord Vishnu with devotion on this auspicious day helps eliminate sins and brings happiness, prosperity, and mental peace. The word “Kamada” itself means “the one that fulfills desires,” which is why this fast is considered highly beneficial for the fulfillment of righteous wishes.
According to the Drik Panchang, Kamada Ekadashi falls on the Ekadashi tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the Chaitra month. The Ekadashi tithi begins on March 28, 2026, at 08:45 AM and ends on March 29, 2026, at 07:46 AM. Based on Udaya Tithi, the fast will be observed on March 29, 2026.
The Parana time for breaking the fast will be on March 30, 2026, from 06:31 AM to 07:09 AM.
Religious scriptures describe Kamada Ekadashi as highly sacred and auspicious. According to the Padma Purana, observing this fast helps a person get rid of sins from both past and present lives. It is also believed to guide devotees toward liberation, or moksha.
Devotees engage in chanting, bhajans, and meditation dedicated to Lord Vishnu on this day. Those who observe the fast with sincerity and discipline are believed to receive divine blessings and experience positive transformation in life.
On this day, devotees should wake up early during Brahma Muhurta, take a bath, and wear clean clothes. An idol or image of Lord Vishnu should be placed on a clean altar. Offer yellow flowers, Tulsi leaves, incense, a lamp, and prasad.
Chant the mantra “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” and spend the day in devotion through bhajans, katha, and kirtan. Staying awake at night and remembering the Lord is considered highly auspicious. The fast should be broken the next day during Dwadashi at the prescribed time.
In the Sanatan tradition, charity or daan, is considered highly virtuous, especially on sacred days like Ekadashi. Donations made on this day are believed to yield multiplied spiritual benefits and please Lord Vishnu. The importance of donation is also mentioned in the Bhagavad Gita:
Datavyam iti yad danam diyate anupakarine,
(दातव्यमिति यद्दानं दीयतेऽनुपकारिणे।)
Deshe kale cha patre cha tad danam sattvikam smritam.
(देशे काले च पात्रे च तद्दानं सात्त्विकं स्मृतम्।।)
This means that charity given as a duty, without expecting anything in return, at the right time and to a deserving person, is considered pure or sattvic.
In Sanatan Dharma, Ann Daan or food donation, is regarded as the highest form of charity. Feeding the poor, needy, and underprivileged on Kamada Ekadashi is considered extremely meritorious. One can also donate clothes or support education for underprivileged children. Supporting meal programs for needy children is a meaningful way to observe this sacred occasion.
