How to start helping the poor and needy?

In 2015, 193 countries signed to take part in Agenda 2030 which aims to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality globally. Over the past few years, the world population has showcased good results of reduction in poverty.

However, this trend was disrupted in 2020 with the outbreak of Covid19. Due to many people losing their incomes and jobs, the poverty rate began rising again. Hence, in order to tackle the situation, several schemes and funds were set up by various governmental and non-governmental organisations. However, without the public’s help, it would not be possible to achieve the goal of eradicating poverty.

In 2021, around 9% of the global population was reported to be living in extreme poverty. Hence, as an individual, it becomes important to understand and support those people who need your help. However, the question is how can one start helping the poor and needy?

There are many ways in which an individual can help the poor and needy. Some of them are-

  • Donate money to NGOs

In India, there are more than 30 lakh NGOs that focus or work towards single or different noble causes. For instance, protection of endangered animals might be an aim of an animal welfare NGO, poor child’s education and women empowerment might be an aim for a child and women welfare NGO, and so on.

However, in order to fulfil their noble cause, these organisations often require monetary funds from individuals, business or other institutions. Hence, donating money to NGOs can be a great way to help the poor and needy.

Nowadays, these NGOs accept online donations too. Hence, one can donate online from any part of the country.

  • Volunteering at NGO

If you are not looking for monetary donations, then donating your skills and time might be a great way of helping the underprivileged too.

One of the best ways to do so is by becoming a volunteer in NGO. You can look up for the NGOs online that accept volunteers for their work and choose the one whose cause you deeply connect with.

  • In kind donations

Apart from volunteering or monetary donations, donating resources like books, blankets and toys can be a great way of helping the underprivileged. Even a simple donation like giving food to the poor, or donating clothes to the underprivileged can be seen as a great help.

  • Sponsor a talented child

If you are someone with a capacity of sponsoring an underprivileged talent, you should definitely take up the idea. There are millions of talented children in the country who go unnoticed due to the lack of opportunities provided to them.

If you can contribute to present those opportunities to even a single talent, it can change someone’s life to a great extent.

  • Fundraising events and collection drives

If you are someone who cannot provide a lot of monetary donations, fundraising events and collection drives are some of the best ways in which you can help the poor and needy.

  • Spread awareness through social media platforms

Social media holds a big influence in today’s world. It just takes a few minutes for a post to reach millions of people. Hence, by sharing stories, facts and data about the poor of the country, you can not only spread awareness, but also encourage millions of people to contribute their little to a noble cause.
