In Sanatan Dharma, the Amavasya date is considered a highly sacred occasion for self-reflection, offering prayers to ancestors, charity, and receiving divine blessings. Among all the Amavasyas that occur throughout the year, Vaishakh Amavasya holds special religious and spiritual significance. Because it falls in the month of Vaishakh, it is considered highly fruitful for virtuous deeds, austerities, bathing, and charity.

According to religious beliefs, chanting, austerities, donations, and service performed on this auspicious day yield manifold merits. This date is considered especially auspicious for the peace of ancestors, the removal of negativity in life, and the attainment of happiness and prosperity.

The Significance of Vaishakh Amavasya

The scriptures state that the month of Vaishakh is very dear to Lord Vishnu himself. Taking a holy bath, remembering ancestors, lighting lamps, and serving the needy on the Amavasya date of this month brings special merit.

It is believed that remembering Lord Vishnu with devotion, offering tarpan (offerings) to ancestors, and donating on this day brings happiness, peace, and prosperity to the family. It also removes the hardships, obstacles, and mental unrest of life.

Every good deed performed on this holy date bestows special merit and infuses positive energy into the devotee’s life.

The Importance of Donation

Charity and service on the day of Vaishakh Amavasya are considered especially virtuous. On this day, feeding the poor, destitute, and hungry, and helping the helpless, is considered a true form of religion.

Referring to charity, Goswami Tulsidas wrote in the Uttarakanda of the Ramcharitmanas:

The four pillars of Dharma (truth, mercy, austerity, and charity) are well-known, of which, in Kaliyuga, charity is the most prominent. Donation, regardless of its form, brings welfare.
