Ekadashi dates have special importance in Sanatan Dharma. Among these, Utpanna Ekadashi, which falls on the Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Margashirsha month, is considered to be the birthplace of all Ekadashis. This is the same holy date on which Mother Ekadashi appeared. By observing fast, fasting and devotion on this day, all sins are destroyed and the path to salvation is paved.
Mythological importance of Utpanna Ekadashi
According to mythology, ‘Ekadashi Devi’ appeared on the day of Utpanna Ekadashi by the grace of Lord Vishnu. Since then this day is celebrated as the date that destroys sins. It has been described in detail in Skanda Purana, Padma Purana and Bhavishyottar Purana. By observing fast on this Ekadashi, the devotee gets the same fruits as the Ashwamedha Yagya and gets a place in the supreme abode of Lord Vishnu.
Importance of charity, service and charity
Utpanna Ekadashi is not just a day of fasting, worship and chanting, but it is a special occasion for service and charity. On this day, serving the poor, hungry, helpless, disabled and orphans gives a hundred times more merit. Lord Krishna has said in the Shrimad Bhagwat Gita –
‘Yagyadanatap:karma na tyaajyam karyameva tat.
Yagya daanam tapashchaiva pavanaani manishinaam’
That is, yajna, charity and penance – these three deeds should never be abandoned because they make the seeker pure and virtuous.
