Sarva Pitru Amavasya, also known as Mahalaya Amavasya, is considered to be the last and most important date of Pitru Paksha. On this day, tarpan, pinddaan, shraddha and donation are done for all known and unknown ancestors. In Sanatan Dharma, this day is said to be the day to bid farewell to the ancestors and open the door to happiness, peace and prosperity in life with their blessings.
It is described in the scriptures that the shraddha and donation done on this day satisfies the soul of the ancestors and liberates them from the debt of the ancestors left unknowingly. This day is also considered special for those souls whose shraddha has not been done properly.
Importance of Sarva Pitru Amavasya
Sarva Pitru Amavasya is a symbol of restraint, faith and service. On this day, bathing in the Ganga, offering prayers to ancestors, doing Pind Daan, silent meditation, eating Brahmin food and serving the helpless are extremely virtuous. A Satvik donation made on this day brings happiness and peace in the family, cures diseases and seeks the blessings of ancestors. It is said in the scriptures that by offering Pitra Tarpan on this day, the sins of the ancestors as well as the entire family are pacified.
