Sarva Pitru Amavasya, also known as Mahalaya Amavasya, is considered the last and most important date of Pitru Paksha. On this day, tarpan (offering), pind daan (offering of offerings), shraddha (shraadh), and donations are performed for all known and unknown ancestors. In Sanatan Dharma, this day is considered a day to bid farewell to the ancestors and, with their blessings, open the doors to happiness, peace, and prosperity in life.

The scriptures state that performing shraddha (shraadh) and donations on this day satisfies the souls of ancestors and liberates them from the debts left unknowingly. This day is also considered special for those souls whose shraddha (shraadh) rituals have not been performed.

Solar Eclipse

This year, a solar eclipse will occur on Sarva Pitru Amavasya. This eclipse will not be visible in India, and therefore, its Sutak period will not be valid in India. However, the combination of the solar eclipse and Pitru Amavasya is extremely rare and beneficial for seekers. Donation made during the eclipse period bestows merit on the devotee.
