According to the Padma Purana, fasting on this Ekadashi gives the same merit as performing a hundred Ashwamedha Yajnas and a thousand Rajasuya Yajnas. The effect of this fast removes all troubles of the person, and their sins are reduced, purifying the soul. Lord Shri Krishna told Yudhishthira that the person who fasts, abstains, donates, and worships on this day, all their sins are destroyed by Lord Vishnu Himself, and they attain the Supreme Abode.

Meaning, Yajna (sacrifice), Daan (donation), and Tap (penance) are not to be abandoned, but should be performed as they purify the seeker.
