Paush Amavasya
Paush Amavasya is considered a highly auspicious and sacred day in Hinduism. This day is especially dedicated to performing rituals such as offering water to ancestors, pind daan, feeding Brahmins, bathing, meditating, serving, and making donations. Paush Amavasya falls in the peak winter season, when the atmosphere is pure and calm. The virtuous deeds performed on this day not only satisfy the ancestors but also pave the way for health, peace, and happiness in one’s life.
It is mentioned in the scriptures that donating water, food, and clothes on PaushAmavasya grants eternal merit. This day is also significant for the peace of souls who did not receive proper tirtha or shraddha rituals.
Importance of Paush Amavasya
Paush Amavasya symbolizes self-discipline, spiritual practice, service, and penance. On this day, bathing in sacred rivers, performing ancestral offerings, practicing silence, feeding Brahmins, and serving the needy purify the mind, soul, and household. Scriptures state that by performing virtuous deeds and donations on this day, all ancestral defects are removed, and peace, happiness, and prosperity are established in the home.
Importance of Donation According to the Bhagavad Gita
datavyamiti yaddanam diyate’anupakarine
deshe kaale cha paatre cha taddanam sattvikam smritam.
Meaning: A donation given without any selfish motive, at the right time, and to the worthy person is called a sattvik (pure) donation.
