Paush Purnima

Paush Purnima is considered an extremely sacred and auspicious date in Hinduism. This day is considered especially auspicious for bathing, worship, charity, penance, and acts of service. The importance of the full moon of the Paush month is further enhanced because on this day, Lord Chandra (the Moon God) is present in the sky with his full radiance, and there is a special transmission of spiritual energy. According to the scriptures, worshipping Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi on Paush Purnima brings happiness, prosperity, and peace in life.

On this day, bathing in holy rivers, offering water to the Sun God, and lighting lamps in the morning are considered especially significant. It is believed that every good deed performed on Paush Purnima bestows inexhaustible merit and paves the way to liberation.

Spiritual Significance of Paush Purnima

According to Puranic beliefs, bathing in the Ganges, Yamuna, or any other holy water source on Paush Purnima destroys a person’s sins and purifies the inner self. Worshipping and offering water to Lord Chandra on this day brings mental peace and freedom from lunar afflictions.

The scriptures state that charity and service performed in the month of Paush are many times more fruitful than on normal days. Remembering, chanting, and meditating on Lord Vishnu on this day removes obstacles in life and opens the path to spiritual progress.

The Importance of Charity

In Sanatana Dharma, charity is considered the best means of salvation in Kali Yuga. Charity performed on Paush Purnima is especially meritorious. The scriptures describe the glory of charity, stating:

Tapah param Kritayuge Tretayam Jnanamuchyate.
Dvapare Yagyamevahu Danamekam Kalau Yuge.

That is, in Satya Yuga, penance; in Treta Yuga, knowledge; in Dwapara Yuga, sacrifice; and in Kali Yuga, charity is the best means for the welfare of mankind. Become a recipient of blessings by feeding the poor, the needy, and children with disabilities.

The day of Paush Purnima is a great opportunity to awaken the spirit of service and humanity. It is said that on this auspicious day, feeding the hungry pleases Lord Vishnu himself, and He bestows special blessings upon His devotees.
