Mokshada Ekadashi

In Sanatan Dharma, Ekadashi dates are considered to bring special merit. Among these, Mokshada Ekadashi, which falls on the Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Margashirsha, is regarded as a highly auspicious and liberation-bestowing date. This is the same sacred Ekadashi when Lord Krishna gave the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna. Observing a fast, vow, and devotion on this day destroys all sins of the devotee and leads them on the path to liberation.

Mythological Significance of Mokshada Ekadashi

The Padma Purana and Vishnu Dharmottara Purana elaborate the significance of Mokshada Ekadashi. Lord Krishna himself told Arjuna about the importance of this vow, saying that anyone who observes fasting, vows, charity, and devotion on this day will have their sins from all past lives eradicated and will attain the supreme abode of Lord Vishnu. Performing the vow of Mokshada Ekadashi brings peace and liberation to the souls of ancestors as well.

The Importance of Donation, Service, and Charity

Mokshada Ekadashi is not only about fasting and chanting but also a day of service, compassion, and charity. Serving the hungry, needy, orphaned, differently-abled, and elderly on this day brings countless merits. In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna says:

“YajnadanaTapahkarma na tyajyam karyamev tat,
Yajno danam tapashchaiva pavanani manishinam.”

Meaning, Yajna (sacrifice), charity, and penance—these three actions should never be abandoned, as they purify the devotee and make them virtuous.
