Mohini Ekadashi holds a very special place in the divine traditions of Sanatan Dharma. This Ekadashi falls on the eleventh day of the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) of the month of Vaishakha. This Ekadashi is considered to be the day that defeats attachment and connects the soul with the Supreme Being.
The name ‘Mohini’ itself signifies that it defeats the illusions of attachment, delusion, lust, greed, and ego. Worshiping Lord Vishnu in the form of Mohini on this sacred day liberates human life from all its shackles and paves the way to salvation.
The Significance of Mohini Ekadashi
The Puranas describe that when the churning of the ocean yielded nectar, a struggle began between the gods and demons to obtain it. Lord Vishnu assumed the form of Mohini and bestowed the nectar upon the gods, paving the way for the welfare of the universe. This is the same Mohini form that symbolized the victory of truth over falsehood.
Religious belief holds that any devotee who observes a fast, observes a fast, and remembers Lord Vishnu’s name on this day will be cleansed of all their sins. Observing the Mohini Ekadashi fast protects against sorrow, poverty, disease, sin, and misfortune. Prayer, service, and charity on this day bestow eternal virtue.
Charity is considered the highest deed in the Sanatan tradition. The Kurma Purana, referring to charity, states:
“Swargayurbhutikamen tathapaopaashantaye.
Mumukshuṇa cha daatvyam brahmanebhyastathāavaham.”
That is, those who desire heaven, long life, and prosperity, and those who aspire to attain peace from sins and salvation, should donate generously to Brahmins and deserving individuals.
