Amavasya dates have special spiritual significance in Sanatan Dharma. Among these, Mauni Amavasya, which falls in the month of Magh, is considered highly virtuous. This day symbolizes silent meditation, self-control, penance, and service. According to scriptures, observing silence and remembering Lord Vishnu on this sacred day calms the restlessness of the mind and purifies the soul.

In the Sanatan tradition, Mauni Amavasya is considered an excellent opportunity for introspection and connecting with God. It is believed that observing a silent fast, chanting, meditating, bathing, and donating on this day destroys a person’s sins from many past lives and bestows mental peace, virtue, and salvation.

Mythological Significance of Mauni Amavasya

According to mythological beliefs, on the day of Mauni Amavasya, Manu Maharaja observed silence and performed rigorous penance, earning it the name “Mauni.” This day is especially considered auspicious for remembering Lord Vishnu, silent meditation, and charity. Chanting, austerity, bathing, and giving on this day yield everlasting results.
The scriptures state that observing silence and meditating on Lord Vishnu on Mauni Amavasya relieves all suffering and paves the way for liberation.

The Importance of Charity, Service, and Silent Meditation

Mauni Amavasya is not limited to a silent fast; it is also a significant festival of compassion, service, and philanthropy. Donating food to Brahmins and the poor, needy, helpless, and disabled children on this day brings special merit.
Religious texts have described charity and service as the best deeds. Referring to charity, Goswami Tulsidas wrote in the Ramcharit Manas:
Tulsi, the water of the river does not decrease when birds drink water.
The wealth of Raghuveer does not decrease when one donates.

Meaning, just as the water of the river does not decrease when birds drink water, similarly, if one has the support of Lord Ram (Raghuveer), then there is never a shortage of money in the house by donating.
