In the Sanatan tradition, the Amavasya date is considered a divine occasion for remembering and serving ancestors. The Amavasya of the month of Chaitra is especially considered highly fruitful for the peace and salvation of ancestors. This is a sacred time when, through devotion and charity, we express gratitude to our ancestors and seek their blessings.
Spiritual Significance
According to religious beliefs, the gates of the ancestral world are in subtle form close to the earth on the day of Amavasya. Shraddha and charity performed with devotion on this date provide peace to the souls of ancestors. It is said in the scriptures that one who offers tarpan to ancestors with sesame seeds, water, and kusha grass on Amavasya day removes obstacles and mental distress from his life. Happiness, prosperity, and peace prevail in the home.
The Virtuous Reward of Charity
Religious texts emphasize the special significance of giving on the new moon day. Offering food, clothing, sesame seeds, jaggery, dakshina, and food to the needy brings special virtuous results.
Many texts from the Sanatan tradition elaborate on the importance of charity. Describing the significance of charity, Goswami Tulsidas said:
Tulsi, even if birds drink, the water of the river never diminishes.
Donating money does not diminish the wealth of those who help, even if the one who helps is Lord Shri Ram (Raghuveer) himself.
That is, just as the water of a mighty river does not diminish, similarly, if the one who helps is Lord Shri Ram (Raghuveer) himself, then the one who donates with a true heart will never face a shortage of wealth.
