Ashadha Amavasya
Ashadha Amavasya is considered a highly auspicious and spiritually significant date in Hinduism. This day is dedicated to the peace of ancestors, self-welfare, and virtuous deeds. According to the scriptures, bathing, meditation, chanting, offering rituals to ancestors (Pitru Tarpan), and charity performed on Amavasya bring happiness, peace, and the blessings of ancestors into one’s life.
This year’s Ashadha Amavasya holds special importance as it falls at the onset of the monsoon season. During this time, the environment is purified, enriched with moisture, and infused with new life. At such a time, acts of service, charity, and penance also purify the mind and soul. This day is especially fruitful for those souls whose Shraddha or Tarpan rituals have not been properly performed.
The Importance of Ashadha Amavasya
This day symbolizes restraint, service, and self-reflection. On this day, activities like bathing in the Ganges, offering Pitru Tarpan, observing silence, meditation, and serving the needy are considered highly meritorious. According to the Puranas, charity performed on this day paves the way for prosperity, balance, and spiritual advancement within the family.
The Importance of Charity According to the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita
The Shrimad Bhagavad Gita says—
“Datavyamiti yaddānaṁ dīyate’nupakāriṇe।
Deśe kāle cha pātre cha taddānaṁ sāttvikaṁ smṛtam॥”
Meaning, the charity that is given selflessly, at the right time, and to the right recipient, is considered sattvic (pure and virtuous) charity.
