Apara Ekadashi holds a very important place in the sacred traditions of Sanatan Dharma. This Ekadashi falls on the eleventh day of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the month of Jyeshtha. This Ekadashi is called “Apara,” meaning a date that bestows infinite virtue, freeing one from sins and leading one on the path of righteousness, virtue, and salvation.
“Apara” itself means immense, limitless. Fasting, chanting, penance, and charity on this day are considered to yield infinite results. Worshiping Lord Vishnu on this day helps cleanse one’s life of sins and purify the soul.
The Importance of Apara Ekadashi
Religious texts state that observing the fast on Apara Ekadashi bestows virtue equivalent to bathing in numerous holy places and performing yagnas. This Ekadashi is considered especially beneficial for those who knowingly or unknowingly commit sins.
It is believed that observing a fast on this day with devotion and regularly liberates one from sins like brahminicide, slander, falsehood, and other sins. The fast of Apara Ekadashi brings happiness, peace, and prosperity to one’s life.
The scriptures emphasize the importance of charity. The Kurma Purana states:
“Swargayurbhutikamen tathapaopaashantaye.
Mumukshuṇa cha daatavyaṁ brahmanebhyastathāavaham.”
That is, those who desire heaven, long life, and prosperity, and those who aspire to attain peace from sins and salvation, should donate generously to Brahmins and deserving individuals.
