Have you ever wondered why certain years in the Hindu calendar feel longer, or why festivals like Diwali and Raksha Bandhan sometimes shift by a few weeks? The answer lies in the mystical and scientifically precise concept of Adhik Maas.

In 2026, we are approaching a rare celestial event: Jyeshtha Adhik Maas. This is not just a gap in the calendar; it is a “divine bonus” month designed for spiritual cleansing, deep meditation, and life-changing charity (Daan).

What is Adhik Maas?

Adhik Maas (literally meaning ‘Extra Month’) is an additional lunar month added to the Hindu calendar every 32.5 months. While the solar calendar follows 365 days, the lunar calendar consists of roughly 354 days. To bridge this 11-day gap and keep our seasons in sync, Vedic science introduces this intercalary month.

Often referred to as Mal Maas (the impure month) or Purushottam Maas, this period is a bridge between our physical time and spiritual growth.

Why Do We Celebrate Adhik Maas?

The history of Adhik Maas is rooted in a beautiful legend of compassion. Originally, this extra month was labeled Mal Maas because it had no presiding deity and was considered inauspicious for worldly celebrations.

Feeling neglected, the month sought refuge with Lord Vishnu. Seeing its plight, the Lord blessed the month with His own supreme name—Purushottam. From that day on, it became a sacred month. We celebrate it to honor this act of inclusion and to utilize this “extra” time for soul-purification through selfless service.

The Different Types of Adhik Maas

Not every Adhik Maas is the same. They are named based on the lunar month they coincide with:

  • Adhik Jyeshtha Maas: When the extra month falls during the Jyeshtha period (as it does in 2026).
  • Adhik Ashadha/Shravan Maas: These occur in different cycles.
  • Kshaya Maas: A very rare occurrence where a month is actually deleted from the year to maintain the lunar-solar balance—this happens only once in 141 to 190 years.

The Power of Annadan & Charity

Charity is the soul of this holy period. Since worldly pleasures are paused, the energy is directed toward helping others.

  • Food (Annadan): Providing meals to the hungry is the highest form of service during Jyeshtha Adhik Maas.
  • Deep Daan: Lighting lamps to symbolize the victory of light over ignorance.
  • Supporting the Specially-Abled: Donating to those with physical challenges is seen as serving the ‘Narayan’ (God) within the human form.

Donate on Adhik Maas

During this Jyeshtha Adhik Maas 2026, your small act of kindness can become a massive blessing. Narayan Seva Sansthan is dedicated to the service of specially-abled individuals and needy children.

By donating food or medicines or supporting corrective surgeries during this holy period, you are directly participating in the Sewa of Lord Purushottam.

  • Feed a Child: Ensure no needy child goes hungry this month.
  • Heal a Life: Help a specially-abled person gain independence through treatment and skill-building.
