Every form of Kumbh Mela—be it Ardh Kumbh, Purna Kumbh or Maha Kumbh; has a unique significance and attraction in itself.

Kumbh Mela: Confluence of Faith and Spirituality

The Kumbh Mela is held in rotation at four major pilgrimage sites—Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. Kumbh Mela is held at one of the pilgrimages every 12 years and the confluence or holy rivers at these places have special significance. The confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati at Prayagraj; Ganga at Haridwar; Kshipra at Ujjain; and Godavari River at Nashik make this fair even more sacred.

For centuries, this fair has been attended by millions of people, including sadhus, saints, devotees, foreign tourists, and the general public. The main purpose of bathing in holy rivers is self-purification, liberation from sins and attainment of salvation.

Ardh Kumbh

Ardh Kumbh is held every six years only in Prayagraj and Haridwar. ‘Ardh’ means ‘half’, and this event is seen as a religious fair that comes in the middle of Purna Kumbh.

This fair is an opportunity for devotees, where they can progress in their religious and spiritual life. Acquiring knowledge by sitting in the company of saints and sages and earning Akshay Punya by bathing in Sangam are the features of Ardh Kumbh.

Poorna Kumbh

Poorna Kumbh is held at an interval of 12 years and is hosted in turn at all the four pilgrimage sites. This fair is called ‘Poorna’ because it concludes the cycle of 12 years.

The importance of Purna Kumbh held in Prayagraj is especially high. It is believed that bathing in Sangam here destroys all sins, and the seeker moves towards attaining salvation in life.

Maha Kumbh

Mahakumbh is organized in Prayagraj only every 144 years. It comes after 12 Purna Kumbhs and hence it has the status of ‘Mahakumbh’. The importance of this event is so high that crores of people from all over the world come to see and experience it.

Mahakumbh is an event where there is a wonderful confluence of spirituality and science. During Kumbh, special attention is paid to the position of planets and constellations, which is considered extremely important from the astrological point of view.

How is the decision to organize Kumbh taken?

The place and time of the Kumbh Mela is determined on the basis of astrological calculations. In this, the position of the major planets, Sun and Jupiter (Guru) is taken into account. Kumbh is organized when Jupiter enters Aquarius and the Sun is located in Aries or Leo. Thus, every event of Kumbh Mela is deeply connected to an astrological event.

Maha Kumbh 2025: Preparations for a wonderful event

The upcoming Maha Kumbh 2025 will be held in Prayagraj from January 13 to February 26. There will be six royal baths in this Maha Kumbh. This event not only has religious significance, but it is also an opportunity to showcase the cultural richness and unity of India.

More than 40 crore devotees are expected to come to this Maha Kumbh. The confluence of this huge crowd will present a scene that will be unique and historic.

Kumbh Mela: World Heritage

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has included the Kumbh Mela in the list of intangible cultural heritage. This event teaches not only India but the whole world how cultural and religious traditions can be respected.

Kumbh Mela not only reveals our religious beliefs, but it also strengthens our cultural identity.
